Counties Within the District

All have since favor the GOP in recent elections, this district once used to be more competitive in the 2000s, but has since seen Dems struggling for relevance.

Clinton County:

Clinton County boasts a rich history from the War of 1812, most notably the Battle of Plattsburgh. Located at the northernmost part of New York’s 21st Congressional District, it shares a border with Canada. Historically a Democratic stronghold, it was one of the last counties in Upstate New York to lean blue before flipping Republican for Donald Trump in 2016—the first time it had done so since 1998.

Essex County:

Home to the iconic Lake Placid, Essex County is known for its rich history and outdoor recreation. It also features Fort Ticonderoga, a pivotal site in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

Franklin County:

Franklin County relies heavily on tourism, driven by its location within the Adirondack Mountains. The county also has a rich history of logging, which played a crucial role in its early economic development.

Fulton County:

Fulton County has a strong tradition of glove production and is a major producer of leather goods. Additionally, dairy farming remains an important part of the local economy.

Hamilton County:

The least populous county in both New York’s 21st Congressional District and the entire state, Hamilton County is defined by its vast forests and natural beauty. Forestry and timber production play a key role in the local economy, though outdoor recreation remains the county’s strongest economic driver.

Herkimer County:

Best known for its maple syrup production, Herkimer County also thrives on outdoor recreation. With its scenic rivers and lakes, the county offers excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Lewis County:

Known for its hiking trails and outdoor recreation, Lewis County is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Beyond its natural beauty, the county’s economy is driven by dairy farming and logging, both of which play a significant role in the region.

Montgomery County:

Home to a stretch of the Mohawk River, Montgomery County has a strong agricultural presence, with dairy farming as a key economic driver. While the metalworking industry was once a major force in the local economy, its influence has declined over time.here.

Jefferson County:

Only a portion of this county is included in NY-21.

Onedia County:

A hub for manufacturing and technology, Oneida County is home to Rome Lab, a leading research facility. The county also attracts nature lovers, with outdoor recreation playing a key role in tourism. History is another highlight, as Oneida County is home to Fort Stanwix, a significant Revolutionary War site.

Saratoga County:

One of the fastest-growing counties in New York, Saratoga County is seeing rapid population growth. Saratoga Springs, known for its iconic Spa State Park, is a major attraction, and boating is also popular in the area. While not a dominant force, technology plays a minor role in the county’s economy.

Schoharie County:

Schoharie County is home to notable historical and natural sites, including the Gilboa Fossil Forest and the Old Stone Fort. Dairy agriculture is a key economic driver, alongside the county's rural landscape, which defines much of its charm and character.

St. Lawerance County:

The largest county by land area in New York, St. Lawrence County is known for its hydroelectric power generation and abundant limestone quarries. Apple farming is also a significant agricultural activity, contributing to the county's rural economy.

Warren County:

Warren County is a hub for medical manufacturing and innovation, home to companies like AngioDynamics Inc. and Boston Scientific Corp. Lake George, a popular destination for relaxation, draws many residents and visitors alike. Additionally, the county hosts the annual Americade motorcycle rally, attracting enthusiasts from across the country.

Washington County:

Washington County is home to Fort Edward, a historically significant site. Agriculture plays a central role in the county’s economy, with slate mining, particularly in Granville, also being an important industry. Tourism is largely centered around the scenic Hudson River, which draws visitors to the area.

Who I think each party should nominate for the General Election

GOP Nominee: Dan Stec

Dan Stec, the incumbent State Senator for NY-45, and former NY Assemblyman from NY-118, has built a strong reputation through his years of service. Senator Stec has earned his stripes in the trenches of this district, establishing crucial relationships with key figures, including the GOP County Chairs. His solid name recognition and local ties make him a strong candidate for the Republican party in this district.

DEM Nominee: Blake Gendebien

Blake Gendebien, who was recently selected as the Democratic nominee (we correctly predicted this), is a fresh face in the race. A dairy farmer, Gendebien shares a common occupation with many constituents in the district, which strengthens his connection to the local community. While other Democratic candidates have previously run for this seat and been defeated, Gendebien offers voters a new alternative.

However, his biggest challenges will be building name recognition and raising sufficient funds to be competitive in the race. He will need to secure a significant amount of financial support to challenge effectively.
